About the UVA CV Genetics Program

The Cardiovascular Genetics program was established in 2013 as a joint effort between the UVA Heart and Vascular Center and UVA Children’s Hospital. Matthew J. Thomas, genetic counselor and program lead, works with cardiologists and surgeons to improve the treatment of hereditary heart disease for patients within the UVA Health System and to expand care to family members who may be at risk.

Program Background

The program provides education and support by connecting at-risk family members with the genetic testing or cardiovascular screening resources they need to manage their risk.

The program focuses on three types of heart disease known to run in families: aortic and vascular diseases (problems with the main blood vessel in the body), cardiomyopathies (heart muscle problems) and primary arrhythmias (heart rhythm problems).

UVA Heart and Vascular Center is one of the largest and most active of such facilities in the region. Each patient receives a personalized care plan, and the team provides excellent care through a comprehensive, collaborative approach.
